In hydronic systems, there’s a direct relationship between high heat within an enclosed space and high pressure. Hot water tanks are particularly vulnerable to thermal expansion, or the increased pressure within a tank as water heats and expands. Over time, thermal expansion can cause tanks to crack and leak or, in worst-case scenarios, explode.
Water displacement is one common method for relieving this pressure to protect hot water tanks from damage. By diverting a portion of the hot water into a separate holding tank, you can keep pressures at reasonable levels in traditional systems. However, utilizing a secondary expansion tank does require additional space, installation time, and maintenance.
